Please review the following flexible instructional modes for the fall 2020 semester.

All courses at University Park with enrollment over 250 will be delivered remotely. At other Penn State campuses, the maximum number of students in an in-person setting is lower, and any class of 100 or more students must be offered remotely. Additionally, smaller classes may need to be offered remotely due to health and safety considerations for faculty and students and the restrictions that physical distancing places on class size and room availability.

If you are already scheduled to teach a WEB course, you don’t need to change your course. WEB courses fit the Remote Asynchronous instructional mode. If you are scheduled to teach a hybrid course that is a combination of remote and in-person learning, this is considered a Mixed-Mode course. You should work with your unit head to determine whether or not your traditionally scheduled in-person sessions can remain in the classroom by meeting physical distancing guidelines.

You must communicate how assessments in your course will be delivered. This may be a mix of in-person and remote assessments, regardless of the delivery method of the course itself. All courses, exams, and assessments will be remote after November 20, 2020.

These instructional modes will also be used for spring 2021.

  • In-Person Instruction - Students meet in the assigned classroom at the time assigned in the course schedule. Students are expected to attend all classes in-person. In the event of occasional and/or temporary absence, students will follow the attendance policy of the University, with some flexibility.
  • Mixed-Mode Instruction - A combination of instructional modes is deployed at the instructor's discretion to meet physical distancing requirements in physical spaces, while also providing students with opportunities for face-to-face interaction and access to specialized on-campus spaces and equipment.
  • Remote Synchronous Instruction - Students attend all classes remotely at the scheduled time. Faculty will identify the communication and collaboration tools appropriate for real-time student interaction and engagement in their course. In the event of occasional and/or temporary absence, students will follow the attendance policy of the University, with some flexibility.
  • Remote Asynchronous Instruction - Course material is made available for students to work through on their own schedules with deadlines for activities and assessments. A variety of communication and collaboration tools allow students to interact and engage at times that work best for them.
